1689 BCF, Chapter 2, Paragraph 1: The Communicable Attributes of God: Part One

What attributes are we thinking of when we speak of the communicable attributes? I like Herman Bavinck’s divisions. He talks about God’s spirituality, here we will speak about God’s incorporeality; invisibility; and vitality/life. Then there are the intellectual attributes, here we discuss things like knowledge and wisdom. Then there are the moral attributes where we speak about things like God’s goodness, holiness and righteousness. Then there are attributes of sovereignty, here we speak of God’s will and power. And then these can be summed up in the attributes of God’s perfection, blessedness and glory. The confession does not offer us an orderly arrangement so we will muddle our way through these. Today we want to consider God’s spirituality and impassibility.
