SUMMARY:Critical Theory Seminar 2021
DESCRIPTION:Joe Fleener is speaking on this topic/subject at the New Zealand Association of Christian School Teachers’ Conference in Wellington in September. This seminar is meant to provide a venue for Joe to share the same material with our church family as this is a matter effecting our current culture at almost every point. \nWe are happy for others from “sister” churches to attend as well. \nYou may not be familiar with the term “Critical Theory” but you are effected by the ideas bound up in this pagan philosophy. It is saturating almost every level of our society from schools\, workplaces\, government ministries/agencies\, universities\, etc. \nThis seminar will aim to explain the issues and offer a Biblical response with plenty of time for discussion. \nLocation: Lemonwood Grove School\, 14 Lemonwood Grove Drive. Time: 10:00am – 5:00pm (BYO lunch\, 1:00-2:00pm).\nFor any other questions please contact Joe on 021998617 or via email joe@rollestonbaptist.org.nz \nEvent image created by Doug Belshaw\, reused under the Creative Commons Licence v4.0.

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom: 2nd Quarter (Practical Theology)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Preaching of the Gospel in the 18th Century: Revival and Lessons for us\nInstructors: Stephen Turner\, Hanli Liu\, and Dwayne Tongamohenoa\nHosted by:  West Church\, Auckland \nThe cross is the centre of our studies for our 2021 Ministry of the Word classes and we want it to be the central focus for the West Church’s Roving Classroom. We’ve decided to take the historical theological approach to the subject and look at 18th century Welsh Calvinistic Methodism and consider William William’s understanding of the cross in particular. Hanli and Dwayne will consider two other men of that revival period and their understanding of the cross in their preaching and ministry.

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom: 1st Quarter (Historical Theology)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: New Zealand Church History: background and beginnings\nInstructor:  Rob Harrod\nHosted by:  Grace Baptist Church\, Christchurch. \nThe focus of this session will be on the coming of the Gospel to New Zealand in 1814\, and the early decades of labour which followed this. We will first survey some of the significant background events and people which led to the first proclamation of the good news in Aotearoa\, before investigating the challenges faced by the early missionaries as they sought to faithfully live and minister God’s Word among the the unreached people here. Then we will explore and marvel at the powerful gospel work done amongst the Maori\, where the gospel once again proved to be the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16). Finally we will seek to draw out some of the helpful lessons from this period for our own lives and ministries in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom: 4th Quarter (Systematic Theology)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Ministry of the Word\nInstructor:  Hanli Liu & Stephen Turner\nHosted by:  West Church\, Auckland \nThere is no question that the Word of God ought to occupy a central role in the church. For example\, the apostolic leaders of the New Testament church stated that they would “devote themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4). Paul’s last letter to Timothy charges him before the presence of God and of Jesus Christ to “preach the word” (2 Timothy 4:2). Without the Word\, we would not have come to a saving faith in Jesus\, for “faith comes from hearing\, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). Passages like these all throughout Scripture highlight the central role of God’s Word in the church. In this class we will consider what the Scriptures teach about this ‘ministry of the word’ by considering questions such as: What does this term actually refer to? What are the theological convictions that must undergird it? How is it to be practised today? Who ought to carry out this ministry? And so on. May the Lord encourage us all as we consider this important topic\, for even if every one of us should be bound in chains\, “the word of God is not bound!” (2 Timothy 2:9).

SUMMARY:Stand for the Gospel 2020
DESCRIPTION:Stand for the Gospel is a weekend conference that was started in 2010 with a vision to serve the church in New Zealand\, across denominations around the unity of the Gospel. We celebrate its life transforming power and take up the call to proclaim it to all people\, calling all people to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. \nThe conference is purposely simple: \n\nWe host one keynote speaker from overseas who expounds the Scriptures challenging us with the Word of God.\nMen and women serving the church in New Zealand offer seminars on topics which unfold implications of the Gospel and applying them to our lives as believers and servants of Christ.\nWe provide an opportunity for a small number of ministries to have display tables where they can share their ministry aims with attendees throughout the weekend.\n\nThe 2020 Keynote speaker is Don Carson (MDiv\, Central Baptist Seminary in Toronto; PhD\, Cambridge University) is emeritus professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield\, Illinois\, and founder & theologian-at-large of The Gospel Coalition. He has authored numerous books\, and recently edited The Enduring Authority of the Christian Scriptures. Carson is an active guest lecturer in academic and church settings around the world. He has written or edited about sixty books (View a chronological list of all publications). He and his wife\, Joy\, have two children. \nFor more information\, please see: http://www.standforthegospel.org/conference/stand-2020/

SUMMARY:School of Theology 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Lord willing\, Dr. James M Renihan will return for an eighth time\, when he will be teaching on the topic with which our School of Theology began in 2007: Baptist Symbolics: the history\, language and theology of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. Historical comparisons will be made to the Westminster and Savoy Confessions\, while other Baptist confessions will also be considered as they relate to this document. The aim of the course is to gain an understanding of the 1689 Confession’s historical setting and its theological relevance to the present-day church. \nThis annual week of teaching and discussion is aimed at helping men who desire to be better equipped for service in their churches. It is a post-graduate level course which assumes familiarity with the Bible and Christian theology\, and it is an intensive week of study with up to 30 hours of teaching over the course of five days. \nWhile it is primarily intended for men who attend churches within the Fellowship of Reformed Baptist Churches in New Zealand\, others may attend at the discretion of our elders. Participants are expected to attend the entire School of Theology which begins with lunch on the Monday and concludes with dinner on the following Friday.

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom: 1st Quarter (Historical Theology)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Baptist History Part 2\nInstructor:  Rob Harrod\nHosted by:  Grace Baptist Church\, Christchurch. \nThe second of two sessions exploring Baptist History. Having looked at the defining marks of a church from Scripture\, we are continuing to trace out how these have been pursued in the life of Baptist churches down through the centuries. In the course of this we will identify what have been some of the historic distinctives of faithful Baptist churches. In this session we will take up modern Baptist history after its beginnings in 17th century England and trace it down to the present day. Along the way we will note many of the challenges and issues faced by these churches as they developed from an English ‘sect’ into a ‘global movement’. This course will acquaint us with many faithful churches and believers who grappled with the meaning of Scripture\, stood for biblical truth\, planted churches\, endured great hardship and opposition\, and sought to co-labour with Christ in the extension of His kingdom in the world.

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom: 4th Quarter (Systematic Theology)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Sola Fide – Firming our Grasp\nInstructor:  Ryan Vinten\nHosted by:  Trinity Reformed Baptist Church\, Hamilton. \nSola Fide is the article by which the church stands or falls. Therefore it is essential that Christians\, and especially Christian ministers\, have a firm grasp of this vital and beautiful doctrine. To further this we will survey the Bible’s teaching on the topic with help from history – considering such things as its nature\, the various threats to it and the\nstakes if those threats aren’t withstood. \nThe Roving Classroom is a yearly program involving four block-study sessions that are taught by various pastors within the fellowship (and on some occasions\, by invited guest speakers). The classroom is hosted at varied (and roving) geographical locations around New Zealand\, as each church offers to host a weekend. Each year the calendar will be ordered around the four traditional theological categories (Exegetical; Systematic; Historical; Practical Theology). Topics within these broader categories are both diverse and relevant\, allowing for a truly holistic ministerial training.

SUMMARY:Stand for the Gospel 2019
DESCRIPTION:Stand for the Gospel is a weekend conference that was started in 2010 with a vision to serve the church in New Zealand\, across denominations around the unity of the Gospel. We celebrate its life transforming power and take up the call to proclaim it to all people\, calling all people to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. \nThe conference is purposely simple: \n\nWe host one keynote speaker from overseas who expounds the Scriptures challenging us with the Word of God.\nMen and women serving the church in New Zealand offer seminars on topics which unfold implications of the Gospel and applying them to our lives as believers and servants of Christ.\nWe provide an opportunity for a small number of ministries to have display tables where they can share their ministry aims with attendees throughout the weekend.\n\nThe 2019 Keynote speaker is Joel Beeke. Joel is a minister of the Heritage Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, and President of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary\, where he is also the professor of Systematic Theology and Homiletics. There will be other speakers too\, details can be found here. \nSchedule details are here: http://www.standforthegospel.org/conference/stand-2019/2019-schedule/ \nYou can register for the conference here: http://www.standforthegospel.org/register/

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom: 2nd Quarter (Practical Theology)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: A Biblical Understanding of Suffering\nInstructor:  Andre Bay\nHosted by:  Shore Baptist Church\, Auckland \nGreat philosophers\, theologians\, doctors and every other person who ever lived on the face of the earth\, have either thought of\, discussed or experienced suffering in their lives. It comes to the wicked as well as the saint in Christ. We hope to look at this topic asking ourselves how we as believers can understand suffering and deal with suffering from a Biblical perspective. This should be beneficial in our own lives and also be helpful to those around us whom we love and want to care for. SUMMARY:Stand for the Gospel 2018
\nThe conference is purposely simple: \n\nWe host one keynote speaker from overseas who expounds the Scriptures challenging us with the Word of God.\nMen and women serving the church in New Zealand offer seminars on topics which unfold implications of the Gospel and applying them to our lives as believers and servants of Christ.\nWe provide an opportunity for a small number of ministries to have display tables where they can share their ministry aims with attendees throughout the weekend.\n\nConferences can be a drain on time and resources. They can also be a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and spiritual feeding. We pray Stand for the Gospel falls into the second category\, and hope that you’ll join us!
