SUMMARY:Roving Classroom Session 4
DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Doctrine of God (Part 2) The Trinity\nInstructor: Ian Goodman (South City Reformed Baptist Church) and Nick Clevely (Covenant Grace Baptist Church)\nHosted by: South City Reformed Baptist Church\, Auckland \nThe classical doctrine of the Trinity has helped believers to understand and articulate what the Scripture reveals about God and also helped us to worship him rightly. The church today has become unfamiliar with this tradition and we’re often confused or perhaps even in error in our thinking about God. The classical doctrine of the Trinity is essential for knowing and worshipping God rightly as Father\, Son and Holy Spirit. In Matthew 16:13-18 Jesus tells us how important a right view of himself and his relationship to the father is for the Church. He is “the Christ\, the Son of the living God.” Without this confession there is no church. This is what the classical doctrine of the Trinity is all concerned with. \nFind us: Drive in through the gate to the carpark at the back then walk through main entrance walkway across the courtyard and into the main hall (building has a green exterior wall).

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom Session 3
DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Council of Nicaea (325AD) – the 1700th anniversary of a pivotal stand for gospel truth\nInstructor: Rob Harrod (Grace Baptist Church)\nHosted by: Grace Baptist Church \nAs Sinclair Ferguson writes\, “The 4th century was one of the most significant periods in the first 1500 years of the church’s existence… a number of events took place that set the trajectory of the church into the future.” \nProminent among these was the Council of Nicaea\, which officially (but not finally) settled a bitter debate over the divinity of Christ by affirming the Scriptures’ clear testimony to his full deity (John 1:1-3\,14\, 18; Colossians 1:15-18\, Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:1-3; Matthew 28:19-20). It is a wonderful testimony to the grace and providence of God that this council of church leaders\, called together by the Roman emperor Constantine\, and battling the influence of Arianism which had gained a foothold in many places before and after Nicaea\, produced such a biblically faithful and influential statement as the Nicene Creed and its subsequent creedal expressions clarifications in 381 AD (Constantinople)\, in 451 AD (Chalcedon) and in 589 AD (Toledo). \nWe will examine the fascinating history\, background and influence of this Council its famous Creed and look at some of the key figures involved – men like Arius\, Athanasius\, and Constantine. As we do so we will see the nature and cost of biblical faithfulness; and be reminded of the need to proclaim and protect the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom Session 1
DESCRIPTION:Topic: A ‘Brief’ History of Bible Translations\nInstructor: Joe Fleener (Rolleston Baptist Church)\nHosted by: Rolleston Baptist Church \nThis edition of our Roving Classroom will provide an overview of Bible Translations. The morning will cover a grand sweep of translation history beginning with pre-New Testament translation of the Old Testament through very early translations of the New Testament and entire Canonical Scriptures. Special focus will be given to non-English translations represented by those languages spoken by many in our New Zealand congregations. The afternoon will give focus to the English Bible and its translation history. All of our time together will\, Lord willing\, not only add to our historical knowledge and appreciation but more importantly increase our thankfulness to the Lord for His Providential work in History to provide us with His Word in languages we can understand.

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom Session 3
DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Doctrine of God (part 1)\nInstructor: Ian Goodman (South City) & Nick Clevely (Covenant Grace)\nHosted by: South City Reformed Baptist Church \nThis will be an exploration into the nature and attributes of God with a concern for both doctrinal accuracy and devotional meditation. Spurgeon once said: \nThere is something exceedingly improving to the mind in a contemplation of the Divinity. It is a subject so vast\, that all our thoughts are lost in its immensity; so deep\, that our pride is drowned in its infinity. Other subjects we can grapple with; in them we feel a kind of self-content\, and go our way with the thought\, ‘Behold I am wise.’ But when we come to this master science\, finding that our plumbline cannot sound its depth\, and that our eagle eye cannot see its height\, we turn away… and with solemn exclamation\, ‘I am but of yesterday\, and know nothing. \nIn future years we hope to deliver The Doctrine of God (Part 2) focusing on the Trinity.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Preaching of the Gospel in the 18th Century: Revival and Lessons for us\nInstructors: Stephen Turner\, Hanli Liu\, and Dwayne Tongamohenoa\nHosted by:  West Church\, Auckland \nThe cross is the centre of our studies for our 2021 Ministry of the Word classes and we want it to be the central focus for the West Church’s Roving Classroom. We’ve decided to take the historical theological approach to the subject and look at 18th century Welsh Calvinistic Methodism and consider William William’s understanding of the cross in particular. Hanli and Dwayne will consider two other men of that revival period and their understanding of the cross in their preaching and ministry.

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom: 1st Quarter (Historical Theology)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: New Zealand Church History: background and beginnings\nInstructor:  Rob Harrod\nHosted by:  Grace Baptist Church\, Christchurch. \nThe focus of this session will be on the coming of the Gospel to New Zealand in 1814\, and the early decades of labour which followed this. We will first survey some of the significant background events and people which led to the first proclamation of the good news in Aotearoa\, before investigating the challenges faced by the early missionaries as they sought to faithfully live and minister God’s Word among the the unreached people here. Then we will explore and marvel at the powerful gospel work done amongst the Maori\, where the gospel once again proved to be the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16). Finally we will seek to draw out some of the helpful lessons from this period for our own lives and ministries in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Roving Classroom: 4th Quarter (Systematic Theology)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Ministry of the Word\nInstructor:  Hanli Liu & Stephen Turner\nHosted by:  West Church\, Auckland \nThere is no question that the Word of God ought to occupy a central role in the church. For example\, the apostolic leaders of the New Testament church stated that they would “devote themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4). Paul’s last letter to Timothy charges him before the presence of God and of Jesus Christ to “preach the word” (2 Timothy 4:2). Without the Word\, we would not have come to a saving faith in Jesus\, for “faith comes from hearing\, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). Passages like these all throughout Scripture highlight the central role of God’s Word in the church. In this class we will consider what the Scriptures teach about this ‘ministry of the word’ by considering questions such as: What does this term actually refer to? What are the theological convictions that must undergird it? How is it to be practised today? Who ought to carry out this ministry? And so on. May the Lord encourage us all as we consider this important topic\, for even if every one of us should be bound in chains\, “the word of God is not bound!” (2 Timothy 2:9).

Crossway. 2017.) \nOur schedule for the day is as follows: \n\n9:00 – 10:30 => Session 1\n10:30 – 11:00 => Morning Tea\n11:00 – 12:30 => Session 2\n12:30 – 1:30 => Lunch\n1:30 – 3:00 => Session 3\n3:00 – 3:30 => Afternoon Tea\n3:30 – 5:00 => Session 4\n\nAs things stand\, we have a Men’s Breakfast scheduled for this same Saturday.
